The 16th Running of the Willowdale Steeplechase Races

It all started in 1752 when Mr. O'Callaghan and Mr. Blake, Irish Foxhunters, raced each other from the steeple of the Buttevant Church to the steeple of St. Mary's in County Cork. Today, thoroughbred horses and professional jockeys compete over timber fences and hurdles in races from two to three and one half miles in length. This spring The Willowdale Steeplechase Race will be one of 32 sanctioned steeplechase race meets held in 12 different States and enjoyed by millions of people.

The Willowdale Steeplechase Races are sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association and we are able to attract some of the best racehorses and top jockeys from around the world. Enjoy the thrilling excitement as horses and their jockeys race on one of the most beautiful steeplechase race courses in the country. Set in a natural amphitheatre the course features traditional European hedges, post and rail fences and a spectacular water jump. In 2001 we acquired British Safety Wings for all the Steeplechase jumps adding to the safety of both horses and jockeys. The 14th running of our spring event is on Sunday, May 14, 2006. If you have never been to The Willowdale Steeplechase Races you have missed a wonderful day of excitement for the entire family. Last spring over 12,000 spectators attended our race.
